Making your words the best they can be

About me

I started my working career as a legal secretary back in 1983 after completing my college course where I learnt to type on a manual typewriter! My interest in publishing began when, during my maternity break, I worked part time for The Red House (a children’s book club). In the years that followed I worked for Hodder Education and The HotHive (an independent publisher) before going freelance in 2012. As a freelance proofreader I work with publishers proofreading fiction and non-fiction as well as with businesses proofreading reports, official documents, website copy, newsletters and blogs. I trained as a proofreader with the Publishing Training Centre and qualified with merit. I am a Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP).

My specialisms

Like most proofreaders I have more experience in some areas than others. I enjoy proofreading fiction, but also business and self-help/mind body spirit books, and preferably a combination of both. My experience in these areas mean I do not have to spend time checking details as I have generally come across most scenarios before. I am also just as happy proofreading all kinds of business material including newsletters, websites, blog posts, magazines and reports.

More about me

I am happily married with three grown-up daughters. I practise yoga and meditation regularly and believe these practices enhance my wellbeing and outlook on life. As well as following a healthy diet I also try and limit the amount of chemicals in my home by using a cloth-based cleaning system, plant-based products (which are also better for the environment) and essential oils. I am passionate about the planet; recycling everything I can and only buying items with recyclable packaging (where possible). My favourite weekend activity is a long walk with a pub lunch, and I love greyhounds. Although I have never owned one (that’s a story for another day) I came close with our rescue lurcher, Indie, who lived to the grand old age of 17.
